Pierre WAGENER
1782-1812

Pierre Wagener was born in Tétange on the 21st of September 1782. His birthplace stood in the lower "Langertengass", His parents were Joannes Wagener (born 8-28-1749) and Margaretha Grimeler (born 8-8-1750). Their children were:

  1. Bernardus Wagener (born 11-2-1773), married Maria Bloo (or Blau) from Leudelange.
  2. Magdalena (born 4-17-1775)
  3. Marie-Catherine (born 12-29-1778), married Jean Nilles from Tétange.
  4. Elisabeth (born 12-29-1778), married Heinrich Mathias Theysen form Peppange.
  5. Johannes (born 11-25-1780), married Eva Reichling, daughter of Jacques and Catherine Decker from Tétange.
  6. Pierre Wagener (born 9-21-1782)
  7. Catharina (born 1-25-1788), married Nic. Kemp, son of J. Pretemer from Soleuvre.
  8. Anna (born 12-2-1790)

It is my estimation that the father, Joannes Wagener, died somewhere in between the years of 1790 and 1802. This is because the documents by notary Motté always designate Margaretha Grimeler as "widow Jean Grimeler". Also, the names of two of the children, Magdalena and Anna, disappeared from the records as of 1802.

After the death of her spouse, the widow Margaretha Wagener-Grimeler experienced great financial difficulties. The family home was mortgaged. To pay off this debt, on the 26th of June 1802, she sold the following properties at public auction: [2] "....these current debt standing in competition with one another are the mortgage owed on the paternal home, personal debts, as well as the sum of money they owe to Bernard Wagener...."[3]

Almost two years later, on the 31st of Jan. 1804, after widow Wagener paid off her debts, she put up serveral more parcels of land for auction and divided up the earnings among her children. These were the items of real estate:
  1. A parcel of land in "Dessusbüsch", Tétange, to Nicolas Yenand, Tétange. Price 79F [31]
  2. Two thirds of a parcel of land in "auf Bromeschberg", Tétange, to Pierre Felgen, Tétange. Price 55F [32]

Catherine Wagener's share was put into safekeeping with the innkeeper Jean Grimeler who obligated himself to pay out her share at the time she became an adult. After this distribution of inheritances to the couple's children, widow Wagener was left with virtually nothing. She only retained the share of income that her husband and her had built up during their marriage. We will find out how she lost the little that remained. On 3-26-1805, her son Pierre Wagener signed on as replacement for Fréderic Melchior from Leudelange to serve in Napoleon's army.
[2] Note: The account of every single parcel of land is interesting insofar as to discover names of the area that have become unknown until now..
