Aviator Memorial

Heavy clouds were hanging over the trees on the Kayler Poteau on 18th of July 1952. The people from the "ARBED-Farm" jumped up when they heard a terrible boom not far from where they were working. They went immediately to the place where the explosion came from to see what had happened. When they came to the place called Krakaul, they made a gruesome discovery. The whole place was littered with bloodstained pieces of cloth, smoking pieces of metal, torn branches and scratched trees.

Memorial at the place called Roschheck

The area was immediately barricaded to keep nosy people away while the investigators did their job. Investigations revealed that a bi-propellor civil airplane, owned by an english air surveying and charting company, crashed at 12.50 o'clock while it was on its way to Klagenfurt, claiming the lives of both the pilot and the photographer.

On the occasion of its fifthies city anniversary, the citizens of Rumelange initiated the errection of a memorial to honor both men. On 30 th of June 1957 a humble memorial was inaugurated at a place called Roschheck close to the crash site. The inscription on the memorial says:

To the memory of L.C.Sharling (28.7.1918) and D.C.Darvell (15.3.1921).
